2018 Ram 1500

The 2018 Ram gets a refreshed Sport trimline, along with “Black” versions of the Big Horn and Lone Star trimlines.

The folks from the Ram Truck brand have announced that when the 2018 models begin reaching showrooms later this year, buyers can opt for a refreshed Ram Sport and a new Big Horn Black – or Lone Star Black if they live in Texas.

2018 Ram Sport

The 2018 Ram 1500 Sport (above in white) features a body colored paint job with either black wheels and badges or chrome-finish wheels and badges, but the big change for the new model year is the grille. The 2017 Ram 1500 Sport also comes with a monochromatic exterior and chrome wheels, but it still retains the familiar crosshair grille, whereas the 2018 Ram Sport will get the bolder RAM grille which was first offered on the Rebel, Limited and Power Wagon models.

The 2018 Ram 1500 Sport is available in 9 exterior colors – Blue Streak, Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal, Delmonico Red, Flame Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel Metallic and True Blue – and pricing begins at $44,395, not including destination.

2018 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty

Those 2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 buyers who like the look of the 2018 Ram 1500 Sport are in luck, as the Heavy Duty models get a similar Sport appearance package as an option on Big Horn, Lone Star and Laramie models – adding the single color exterior, the black or silver wheels/badges and the RAM grille. The Ram 2500 and 3500 with the Sport option package can be ordered in Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal, Delmonico Red, Granite Crystal Metallic and Pearl White (Laramie only). Pricing on the 2018 Ram 2500 Sport Appearance Package starts at $45,335, not including destination, and that price would seemingly apply to a Ram 2500 Big Horn, 2WD with the 5.7L Hemi.

2018 Ram Big Horn Black and Lone Star Black

Also new for the 2018 Ram 1500 are the Big Horn Black and Lone Star Black packages. The Big Horn Black package starts with the features of the current Big Horn trimline, but as you might have guessed, it adds black trim around the exterior. This package adds a black grille, all black badging, black wheels, black headlight bezels and it is only available in black. The Lone Star Black is similar to the Big Horn Black, except the Lone Star Black is only sold in Texas, but in every other way, this new package matches the Big Horn Black sold in the other 49 states.

2018 Ram 1500

The 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn Black and Lone Star Black models will carry a starting price of $44,290, not including the $1,395 destination fee which applies to all 2018 Ram trucks.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
