This Challenger Hemi Convertible Is One of Twelve

By -

A mid-sized touring convertible with a huge 426 Hemi V8 under the hood! Yeah, it doesn’t get much more muscle car than this.

Looking back at 1970, it makes some sense that only 12 people wanted to pony up for the big engine in their Challenger convertible. The fact that only five of the twelve were equipped with a 4-speed manual, like this Muscle Car Of The Week, makes for a slightly more surprising statistic. If you’re going to go crazy and get the very expensive, very powerful, and very thirsty “racing” engine, why burden it with a terrible automatic? Wouldn’t half the fun of driving a car like this come from grabbing hold of the pistol-grip shifter and ramming it into the next gear? It’s a very visceral and exciting sensation.

This particular car is painted in our favorite shade: Plum Crazy Purple. As if a drop-top MoPar wasn’t enough to snap necks these days, painting it a bright shiny coat of purple is the icing on the cake. The Challenger is a particularly beautiful shape, especially with the top lowered. And the purple definitely helps display those gorgeous lines. This car would be at home parked in the rows at a muscle car show, and would certainly attract some looks. But we’d prefer to take it for a long cruise. Somewhere wide open, so you can really open up the Hemi and let it sing.

This video is incredible in that it takes everything about MoPar culture and condenses it down to just under six minutes. You want to hear pedantic rambling about option codes and build dates? This is the video for you. Challenger guys really enjoy that type of number crunching, though, right? This car is one-of-one in their eyes, because it’s a 1970 Challenger R/T Hemi 4-speed in Plum Crazy, built on a Tuesday, by a guy named Jeff. And that was the only day he ate pastrami for lunch that entire month. Sure it’s rare, but how great is it to drive? Let’s go do a burnout.
