Dodge Challenger R/T Propane Conversion

This Dodge Challenger R/T gets the best of both worlds thanks to its propane conversion and retention of gas power.

In recent years, we’ve begun to see more and more commercial vehicles running on propane or equipped with a propane conversion, and for several good reasons. After all, propane is oftentimes cheaper to run in a vehicle like that than gas or diesel, it burns cleaner than those fuels and is more environmentally friendly, and because of its lower carbon content and higher octane, it also leads to less maintenance and upkeep, to boot. Thus, it isn’t terribly surprising that this 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T owned by Reddit user mygoghedidit also recently received a propane conversion of its own.

This particular Dodge Challenger is equipped with the 5.7-liter V8, but its owner added a 13 gallon propane tank and the resulting equipment that it needs to run on that particular type of fuel, rather than traditional gas. According to the owner, it cost around $1,200 to purchase all of the parts needed to complete this conversion, though he admits that his friend did the work, so everyone’s own cost to complete this conversion might be a bit higher.

Regardless, even though the owner admits he isn’t saving a ton of money on fuel with this conversion, there are also a couple of  downsides to such a conversion – like a slight loss of power and efficiency in some cases, but ultimately, propane is likely to be far easier on the engine over time – increasing its lifespan, to boot. That’s why these propane conversions are generally far more popular in places like Europe – where gas prices are quite literally through the roof – than in the U.S., where they can vary greatly by state.

In this case, the owner still has the option to run on regular fuel when desired, and his car is even set up to automatically switch to that traditional fuel when it runs out of propane. In total, he notes that he can get around 620 total miles of range on the highway, which is undoubtedly impressive for a V8-powered muscle car – and another reason why these types of conversions are slowly starting to become more popular on cars like the Dodge Challenger.
