‘Mr. & Mrs. Hellcat’ Hit the Strip for Date Night

By -

Husband and wife take to the drag strip to settle a score. Who’s Mopar is more hellish—Challenger or Charger?

It’s a tale as old as time: In order to ensure the success of a relationship, both parties should have similar interests and hobbies. Otherwise, over time, it makes it difficult for the two to have much to talk about or relate to. Adhering to the tried and true way to keep a marriage thriving, two Dodge Hellcat owners who are married to each other recently headed out for a track day, where they squared off against each other. Obviously, the intention behind the race is to have fun, but no one can deny the answer that will come from the victor: Which is the superior hellish feline, the Charger or the Challenger?

As seen in the video posted by Wheels, Doug and Tracy have cars from the same manufacturer, including in the same color, and built for the same purpose. They’re both packing more than 700 horsepower under the hood with the same legendary 6.2 liter Hellcat V8. Even more interesting, both Mopars have E85 tunes, which increased their output to 750 hp each according to Wheels. That aside, how similar are the cars stats wise? Well, surprisingly, the Charger is actually the heavier car out of the two. The curb weight is rated at 4,575 pounds, while the Challenger is 4,448 pounds. It’s only a difference of 130 lbs, and it doesn’t seem like much, but we all know that every ounce can mean the difference between a win or a loss at the strip.

With the cars so close in terms of weight and power, realistically, it comes down to who is the better driver with the quicker reaction time. As the pair lined up, the situation grew more tense with every second. When the light turned green both halves of the couple reared forward—both reacted as quickly as they were off the line. From an observer’s point of view, though, it looked like the husband in the Dodge Challenger had the better launch. At the end of the run, the Mrs., Tracy, in the Charger took the loss as her husband Doug earned a 10.39, while she earned a 10.79. Incredibly, though, their speeds were eerily similar. His speed was recorded at 134.58 mph, while hers was 134.54.

For the second run, the two switched lanes, but it was Doug in the Challenger that pulled ahead and won once again, but only by the hairs of his chin. He earned a 10.48 at 135.13 mph, and Tracy was timed at 10.74 at 134.26. Two out of three runs the Charger has fallen behind, but it’s beyond impressive just how quick the heavier Charger really is.

Then it came time for the final run. Tires were burned and the large V8s screamed as the pair crawled to the starting line. As the wedded drivers wait for the light to turn green, the announcer revealed that both cars where dyno tested, and the results were surprising. Tracy’s Charger only had one less horse than his Challenger, so the two cars turned out to be more evenly matched than previously thought. Just as the announcer finished his sentence, the light turned green and the took off like two Hellcats out of, well, Hell. Despite the impressive start, Tracy experienced some problems and fell back while her husband tore down the track. His Challenger won over all with a final time of 10.40 at over 135 mph. Tracy’s final time was her slowest, with 12.35.

While it is a loss in terms of who got the best time, it’s a solid win that these two have a love of drag racing (and Dodge) in common. Hopefully we’ll see more videos of these two peacefully and wholesomely duking it out in their amazing Dodge Hellcats.
