Stellantis is putting Ram’s powerfully efficient V6 EcoDiesel to rest in favor of all-electric plans

Start making a playlist of sad farewell tunes, because Stellantis officially announced the impending demise of the V6 EcoDiesel to make room the an all-electric model. The 3.0 liter V6 motor remains the most fuel efficient motor in a full-sized pickup, adveraged 33 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg with combined driving. With the tank size being 33 gallons, it wasn’t uncommon for Rams to go 1,000 miles between fill-ups. It’s also one of the most powerful, with 480 lb ft of torque making for an impressive 12,560 lb towing capacity.

Ram wasn’t the only company to discontinue their diesel variant. Ford also discontinued the diesel option for the F-150, leaving Chevy’s Silverado and GMC Sierra to pick up the torch. Though, not all hope is lost, as customers can still order an EcoDiesel for the 1500 until January of 2023. The heavier duty trucks like the 2500 and 3500 will still have a Cummins diesel as an option, though. Of which, are due for a redesign that will be revealed some time this month.

The all-electric model is rumored to premier later this year in Texas, and will be available for purchase in 2024. According to Car & Driver’s Joey Capparella, Ram is seeking potential buyer input on the pending EV. Listening closely to their loyal fanbase, Ram is encouraging people to voice their concerns, express their opinions and ask questions. Ram will also start Ram Real Talk Hour in an effort to learn what people want from EV vans and trucks.

Ram Revolution

Ram to walk Electric Avenue

The new EV Ram will compete directly with Chevy’s all-electric Silverado and Ford’s F-150 Lightning. It may also go up to bat against GMC’s Hummer and the almighty Rivian R1T. The era of all-electric trucks is upon us, and Stellantis is eager to enter the ring. In addition to this coming EV, Ram has previously announced plans to offer EVs as a majority of their lineup, and have an entire category of EVs by 2030.

While range, charging capacity, towing and power figures are yet to come, Ram has announced a range-extender version. The Range Extender would ironically be an auxiliary internal combustion engine that would charge the battery, like a reverse hybrid system. It’s possible Ram is paying close attention to how an all-electric truck is affected by towing, as range is dramatically reduced with an EV is under load.

We’re not sure what’s to come with the new EV, but we’re excited to find out.
