Rare ’68 Dodge Coronet Super Bee Stings Us in a Good Way
One of just 345 produced, this fine slice of classic Dodge muscle certainly isn’t something you see every day.
Dodge produced so many excellent muscle cars in the ’60s and ’70s, it’s easy to forget about at least one or two of them. And if it’s been a while since you thought about a ’68 Dodge Coronet Super Bee, well, there’s a good reason for that. The mid-year model is rather rare, no matter which engine it came equipped with. The most common, as seen here, is the coupe. And yet, only 345 of those were produced. A mere 9 convertibles and 2 Hemis round out the scant number of ’68 Super Bees. And this gem we spotted over at Classic Car Network is a numbers-matching example, to boot. Well, mostly.
Dodge turned its rather pedestrian Coronet into a Super Bee with a few tried-and-true hot rod tricks. First, they threw a 383 V8 producing 335 horsepower under the hood. They backed that up with a 4-speed manual transmission, mounted on the floor and controlled by a Hurst “Competition Plus” shifter. Rounding out this tantalizing package was a heavy duty suspension, power-bulge hood, “bumblebee” stripes, and dual exhaust.
This particular ’68 Super Bee has lived under only three owners its entire life, the first keeping it until 2007. The second owner restored the car and replaced the original 383 with a 440, though the original engine was also rebuilt and is being included in the sale. Most of the rest of this classic Dodge remains original, including the attractive Medium Dark Turquoise paint and black interior. Power steering and a vintage style radio were added in recent years, however.
Nearly Perfect Otherwise
The rest of this special Dodge appears to be in nearly perfect condition. It’s enjoyed a recent brake service, along with new wheel bearings and diff fluid. All of the chrome and trim appears to be in great shape, and the body and paintwork looks pretty superb. It even sports the Tic-Toc-Tach option, which along with the paint code makes for one seriously rare Super Bee.
It may not be the most appreciated model in Dodge’s illustrious history. But the ’68 Coronet Super Bee is certainly a cool ride. Throw in its inherent rarity, and you’ve got a car guaranteed to sting you (in a good way) every time you lay eyes on it.
