The King Demon

Once owned by ‘The King of NASCAR,’ Demon is the 43rd off the assembly line, was delivered to him near the high banks of Daytona.

From the Sixties to 1978, Richard Petty dominated NASCAR with plenty of Mopar power under the hood. “The King’s” most famous Mopars include the 1970 Plymouth Superbird and the 1971-74 Dodge Charger, while the most infamous, the 1978 Magnum, drove him to General Motors for good near end of the ’78 Winston Cup season. Petty still has love for “The Brotherhood of Muscle,” though. His most recent ride happened to be none other than the one-year-only Demon.

The rare ride recently landed on eBay, and it’s a sight to see.

Of the 3,300 Demons built for the 2018 model year, Petty’s stands out for a few reasons. The car’s VIN is No. 0043, in honor of his number, now campaigned by Richard Petty Motorsports driver Bubba Wallace in the NASCAR Cup Series. The Demon Crate, which included a pair of front drag radials, plus the tools to attach them, is also No. 0043. Both car and crate were personally chosen by Petty.

Inside the Demon, you’ll find Petty’s autograph on the driver’s side dash, next to the Demon VIN plaque underneath the air vent. The windshield is adorned with the Petty’s Garage logo; his company happens to tune Challengers, among other cars.

Just in front of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 is yet another autograph by Petty, located over the left headlight array under the hood. We don’t know if he paid a dollar to delete the rear seat, but we do know he had it delivered to Daytona Beach, Florida, not far from Daytona International Speedway, where Petty made his name, and won his 200th and final race on the Fourth of July weekend in 1984.

The King's Demon

As for how it landed on the eBay account of Cass Burch Chrysler in Valdosta, Georgia, we couldn’t find any info on whether Petty has a relationship with the dealership. No matter what, though, this is a Demon that once stood on the shoulders of giants, which is more than any of the other 3,299 Demons can claim for themselves.
