Supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger

This supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger was abandoned for 35 years. It was rescued but now must survive an insane power boost.

A few months ago, we covered this 1968 Dodge Charger that was left to rot for 35 years. YouTuber Westen Champlin rescued it and got it running again. However, if you know anything about Champlin he was not going to be happy just getting it out on the road. He wanted more power. A lot more power. So, how do you add power? With a massive supercharger of course. Now this supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger has another challenge to face. Can it survive the increased power that it is now being asked to handle?

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” presented by Nitto features this newly supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger. Champlin has posted a video on his channel of the Charger getting a Detroit Diesel 8V71 Supercharger mounted on top of its engine. It looks awesome. It sounds awesome. But can this tired, old Charger survive the amount of power and stress that is about to be unleashed upon it? Well, there is only one way to find out.

The Build

Champlin displays his usual kid in a candy store excitement as he unwraps all the shiny new engine upgrades. The intake, supercharger, fuel regulator, blower scoop and so on all bring a smile as they are installed in the Charger. An even bigger smile is seen when the engine fires up for the first time. But the good times don’t last very long. The engine starts to cut out and backfire. However, after a few days of troubleshooting and a small fire, things finally get sorted to the point where it is ready to hit the open road.

Burnout

Champlin makes it all of about 20 yards out of his garage before he performs the first burnout test. He drops it into second gear and lets it rip. The supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger performs like a champ. It puts on a beautiful burnout display and sounds good while doing it. He then takes it on a short drive to the local auto parts store for some more tire shredding fun. He loses a drag race to a Hyundai along the way but that is not important. “This thing is a perfect daily driver. I can cruise this thing around anywhere.” Says an excited and overly optimistic Champlin.

I Am The One Who Knocks

On the way to the auto parts store the Charger begins to misbehave a bit. Champlin pulls over to take a closer look. The engine has developed a rather nasty knock. But he decides to press on. “You know what they say about engines that are knocking? Keep driving until they don’t knock no more.” Says Champlin. He not only keeps driving it he does more burnouts in the parking lot of the store. The car starts to sound sicker and sicker. But amazingly after a while it seems to clear up on its own. And that is exactly when the cops show up.

Back To the Country

If the cops don’t like burnouts being done in parking lots, then you go to where there are no cops. That is exactly what Champlin does as he heads for the country. He gets the supercharged 1968 Dodge Charger out in the fields and drifts it around for a while. The car is actually holding up quite well and sounds healthy at this point. It seems like this car is really enjoying its newfound power. Checkout the video below to see this muscle car doing muscle car things. We promise you it will put a smile on your face.
