This Amazing Off-Road Dodge Caravan Concept Almost Became a Reality
Years before the off-road craze took hold of the automotive market, this Dodge Caravan concept nearly made it to production.
Throughout the long and illustrious history of the automobile, there have been countless concepts introduced that many of us wish had made it to production, but they didn’t quite get there, for a number of reasons. Sometimes, concepts are just so far out there that producing them in mass quantities just isn’t reasonable – or even possible. But this wild off-road Dodge Caravan concept conjured up by Chrysler designer Michael Santoro nearly did, and we’d even go so far as to argue that it should have.
Santoro has quite the resume from his time at that particular automaker, having had a hand in designing the TJ Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Stratus, and Chrysler Cirrus, to name just a few. But he also had a hand in the development of vans during a time when those types of vehicles were all the rage, which is what inspired him to conjure up this off-road Dodge Caravan concept, which was one of many cool ideas he had, along with a convertible surf van and a minivan taxi.
Santoro’s idea for an off-road-focused Caravan came along years before such things became commonplace, and he was tasked with creating it on a very limited budget. As such, he focused mainly on the van’s appearances, giving it a unique paint job, some graphics, blacked-out B-pillars, and unique wheels. But there were functional upgrades present as well, such as brush guards, side steps, a light bar, a roof rack, and beefy tires. Turns out, Santoro was a big fan of how this concept turned out, and so were those who would need to green light such a project.
“Upper management loved the idea so much, they had a full size prototype built,” Santoro said. “The vehicle was shown to Dodge dealers who also loved it. Everyone loved it…except the Jeep dealers who felt it would cannibalize sales. The prototype was a step away from premiering at the Chicago Auto Show when the plug was pulled at the last moment.”
Sadly, that spelled the end of this promising project, which would have otherwise been built and sold in an era that existed far before the current off-road craze took ahold of the entire industry. These days, automakers churn out all sorts of off-road-focused vehicles for consumer consumption, though oftentimes they just consist of little more than appearance packages. Sadly, this rugged Caravan simply wasn’t meant to be, but we imagine it would have been a pretty cool alternative to the typical, boring minivan if it did.
