Wicked Wednesday: Christine Is a Pure Evil 1958 Plymouth Fury That Can’t Be Killed

Christine

Christine is one of the most iconic horror movie cars ever, and this 1958 Plymouth Fury is one of two survivors that was used in the film.

It is horror movie season. The time of the year when everyone lets out their dark side a little bit. Houses are decorated with witches, ghosts, and skeletons. Not many people decorate for Halloween with a car. But that is an unfortunate oversight. Because one of the most iconic horror movie villains was a 1958 Plymouth Fury. The car was the star of the 1983 film Christine, and the Plymouth goes by the same name. If you have not seen the movie, shame on you, go watch it now. Those that have seen it can attest to how well done this classic John Carpenter film was. The car played a perfect villain. It was evil from the day it was born. And if you ever happen to see a red 1958 Plymouth Fury on the road, you can’t help but wonder if it could be Christine.

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” is all about Christine. The car we see here is one of just two left in the world that was used in the film. The current owner is Martin Sanchez. And what makes him the perfect owner for this car is that in many ways his young life paralleled that of the main character Arnie Cunningham. In a video posted to theAFICIONAUTO YouTube channel Sanchez describes his high school days. At just 14 years old he bought an old Pontiac. His parents hated it, but he spent all of his time trying to retore it. But some bullies from his school destroyed it. Sounds eerily similar to the movie, right? He then decided that he needed to get a 1958 Plymouth Fury, so he could have a Christine of his own.

The Search

Interior

Sanchez read the book before the film was made and decided he wanted a 2-door 1958 Plymouth Fury. The problem was that Sanchez was a 16-year-old kid and Carpenter was buying up all the 2-door 1958 Plymouth Fury cars that he could find to use in his film. Eventually through some connections Sanchez found a car. Although it was a complete basket case when he got it. His father was questioning what his son was thinking by buying such a mess. Sanchez then found a shop that had about two dozen Christine wrecks in the yard. He was able to pull as many parts off them as he wanted to restore his example.

The Desire

Christine

We think a lot of people out there can relate to the story so far. You get a certain car in your head for some reason. You want THAT car and nothing else will do. Everyone else around you thinks you are nuts. But the heck with them, you want what you want, and no one is going to talk you out of it. Not even your own parents. And then after a lot of hard work all the doubters begin to come around when they see the finished product. That is what happened with Sanchez, and many like him. So, if you are just starting a journey like this, we urge you to stay the course. Don’t let others talk you out of your dream.

The Result

Movie prop

Sanchez built himself a fantastic Christine. The car has all the movie memorabilia that you can imagine and has even been signed by many people that worked on the film including Carpenter. As it sits, it is extremely valuable from a financial perspective. But as a passion project it is even more valuable. Sanchez has no plans to sell the car and he enjoys taking it to shows and sharing it with as many people as possible. Christine may be pure evil, but she has a soft side too.
