Word of warning if you have a larger stereo system it slows the alternator and lessens the output...

 

Yea I don't but big stereos in my car....too much weight.
But you are right...just like the gears on a bicycle work...the larger crank pulley spins the smaller alternator pulley faster whereas a UDP doesn't spin the alternator as fast, causing a lag for bigger more powerful systems.
