Default Oily intake, throttle body, and poor idle

Greetings from Germany. I am new here but I have been reading the threads to find info for a while. Anyhow I just removed the throttle body in an effort to clean the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve and I noticed that the intake is coated with oil...pretty thick layer. My car has an idle problem and it smokes (oil burner) so I want to fix it without going to the dealer. The dealershipsare useless here.

My car is a 1996 Avenger 2.0 I4 5 speed manual.

My first question is how can I clean the intake without removing it? I don't have any seafoam or a way to purchase any locally. Carb cleaner perhaps?? Once i get the intake cleaned, how can I stop this from happening again?? Is it possibly a bad EGR?

Any help and ideas is appreciated.

Many thanks from Germany,

Ray

The oily build up is normally from the EGR ... If you can't get seafoam They make Throttle body cleaner, If you can't find it Carb cleaner can work but I'd only use it on a REMOVED INTAKE
As it might damage the injectors O rings

I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body and idle air control valve. I will replace the EGR forgeneral purposebecause I don't know if its bad or not. The intake is coated with oil and the car smokes like crazy from the exhaust. After seeing all of the nicer avangers on here I am motivated to do some work on getting mine up to speed.

I'd assume no emmisions in Germany I'd try to block it off at the intake ...
Smoke out the exhaust is likely rings/pistons Are you loosing oil ???

A compression check proved the rings to be ok. The block was replaced at 130,000 miles. It now has 185,000 on the odometer. The PCV is probably shot. I hope its something simple so I can stop troubleshooting and start modding.

Thanks

Have you tried a leakdown test ...might show if the valve seals are bad ...
Have you checked the Spark plug holes for oil build up ???

Spark plugs and boots looked ok. I did replace the plugs anyhow. I have a feeling that its the PCV valve. I will know by tomorrow. After reviewing the maintenance history of the car its probably less likely to be an internal engine part. I also will consider purchasing a new motor if a rebuild is required.

More questions about the short block/long block if it cimes to that.

Thanks to all for the help and ideas. I will keep you all informed and share pics of my cars as soon as the venge is back to 100%
