I have a 96 Venge with the 2.5L V6. The husband and I changed the alternator (damn thing died on friday) and the belt. We also changed the spark plugs (the were really bad, almost all of them had oil on them). This morning on my way to work the check engine light started flashing (usually it's solidbecause I need to replace an oxygen sensor). I check it after work with the code reader and got code P0300-multiple cylinder misfire. The seems to be running better.....I don't understand what's going on. IS there something I forgot to do when we put her back together?!?!? Does the car need to "reset" itself because the plugs were so bad? Should I even be driving the car? Any and all help/advice is appreciated............

 

Well you replaced the alternator , nothing much to do with misfires ...
OK you say the plugs were covered with oil internally (on the plug tips) or externally ( on the plugs tops/porcelien)???
If it's externally you need to replace the plug tube seals and valve cover gaskets replaced
Did you seat the plug wires properly ???
could be bad plug wires /distributor cap or rotor as well

 

OK here's where I'm at.....

I replace the plug wires and took the car out for a drive. The check engine light started to flash again.....turns out misfire in cylinder 4, which happend to get the spark plug that was dropped. Drove the car to work this morning (had NO choice). ON the way home I stopped to get another plug and put it in. The car was VERY hard to start, I checked the computer again and got "multiple cylinder misfire" and in "cylinder 4". Is it possible that bad spark wires could foul out the distributer cap and rotor???? If those are replaced, would that clear up the misfire codes? How often should those be replaced? I'm just confused I guess.....I've put so much into this car in the 16 months I've owned it. And Bad Venge thanks for all your help I do appreciate it!>

OOHHH the plugs were check for oil when I replace the wires......there wasn't much on the front 3 and barely any on the back 3. I think what happened is too much oil was added on atleast 2 occasions.

 

I'm not following the "dropped" plug ...
I've never heard of bad plug wires fouling cap/rotor unless they are shorted to ground ...

 

I dropped the spark plug on the ground........


I don't get it!!! I just replaced the distributor cap/rotor (6/23 8:30pm) and I'm still getting a code for "multiple cylinder misfire" and "misfire in cylinder 4". What am I not thinking of?!?!?!?!?

 

if you replaced all the plugs wires cap and rotor next thing to look at is a fuel injector. they are common to go andcosts around 60 bucks. Anything else might be internal. Hope this helps

 

How hard is it to replace and where on the car is it? I think part of the problem has been solved....on of the bolts to the EGR tube had the head sheered off....I think is was sucking in air. Also, how common is it for the sensor in the distrubtor to go bad? Thanks for the help!

 

I wouldn't think the fuel injectors would give a cylinder misfire ...

The EGR shouldn't give a misfire either , it might lean out a little due to extra unmetered air I've seen them with the tube split open and still run fine...

What sensor inside the distributor ???

 

I believe it's the crank angle sensor

 

Crank Position Sensor ... Not in the distrbutor, CPS testing procedure in the top of the forum
