Default Check Engine Light Stays On- Need Help Please

Hello everyone.I have a 1998 Dodge Avenger Sport with a V6 and 2.5.The car has only 53,000 miles on it.The problem I have is that the check engine light stays on all the time.I took out the battery and the light did go off but came back on in a few days. The car runs perfect. No probelms with it at all.I just did what was called "the key dance" where you can read the flashes the check engine light does.I did this and the check engine light did a very quick flash. That's it.Only a very short flash. What code is this?? Can anyone help me out?? I also took the car to sears auto center where I was told by them that it looked like the cars computer is shot.He told me to go to the dealer as sears does not do computer related services.I am confused and hope someone can help m,e out as to what may be wrong with my car.Thank You.

The 98+ does not do the key dance ... You will need to get the car to an advanced/or an autozone and get the codes read with a scanner , come back with the codes and then we can tell you fixes ect

Thanks for your help.I did some searching on the net and just as I figured-you can't do key dance on 1998 dodge avenger.I will take it to autozone and let them scan it and will let you know what they find.Thanks.

it means that the on-board computer (known as the Electronic Control Module, or ECM) has detected a problem in one of the many systems it monitors and controls. The problem may be minor but it could be serious.
