Default 95 Dodge Avenger help

I hope somone can help me. Last night my Avenger overheated and a small amount of smoke came out from the sides of the hood. All day I had smelled what I thought was tranny fluid but didn't really think too much about it because it has a leak around the gasket, so I thought that it was just leaking and burning off on the pan. Turns out it was antifreeze I was actually smelling.
For the past few months the right side of the motor has been making a squealing noise and we weren't sure if it was the belt or the water pump. If it is the water pump that finally went and made it overheat, how hard is it too replace? My husband said it could have blown the headgasket too.
A car dealer "friend" of my husbands said it would cost about $500 dollars to replace because you have to tear half of the motor out. I don't know whether to believe him or not. I love my Venge and just spent about $400 in a new exaust and turbo muffler so I really don't want to get rid of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

well if its from the right side when ur in the car then its the most common squeaking problem in every car. a loose belt or a belt or pulley with oil or grease on it. id recommend tightening ur belt and even spraying it with some belt dressing

I am sure you have fixed the problem by now but if there is any one out there who need to know--
the water pump is driven by the timing belt. so you would have to remove the Timeing belt to replace the pump.

It is recommended that the water pump be replace evry time you have the timeing belt replaced
