Default '96 V6 ES Avenger Engine

I got an abused Avenger and I would like to upgrade the engine/have some fun tinkering with it.

Now, I have noticed there isn't to much too much room to tinker inside of the engine compartment. Is there a smaller V6 or maybe a 4 cylinder that I can put in to give me some room?

Thanks. Is it directly compatable with my current tranny or will I have to get some kind of a conversion?
