How to replace Avenger Spark Plugs?
are there any tips anyone can offer? im in the same boat and getting ready to tear it apart. looks like the bolts in the back may cause a problem. any tips would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.
You should buy a Haynes manual from a near by autoparts store. I bought mine from autozone for about $15 and it will help you do almost anything you want to change or fix on your avenger.
in the 2.5 get ready for a chore. you have to take off the plenium (makesure to get new upper gaskets) then you should be able to get to the back side of the motor.. when i overhauld mine, i took my hood off so i had plenty of room to worm around. MAKE SURE TO PUSH THE PLUG WIRES DOWN HARD!!! you dont want one to pop off and have to take it all apart again. Also do not mix any of the plug wires, a good rule of thumb... do it one at a time. while you have the plenium off, now is a good time to think about replacing your plugs, plug wire, and distributor cap and rotor. once again you must take your time. you will also need to get a socket with an extention on it because the plugs sit about 4 inches down into the valve cover. have a long pair of needle nose pliers hady, you may need them to grab out the old plugs.... when you put the new plug in place, go slow! you dont want to cross-thread a spark plug! if the plug dosnt screw in easily, back it up and try again. GET A HAYNES MANUAL!!!! THEY ARE AWSOME!
It's just nuts and bolts man. I just replaced mine. Just pay attention to what you take off from where. Make sure you check the tube seals for any leaks. If so you'll have to take the valve covers off to replace them. Nothing to it man.
I had the Avengers cousin, a '98 Sebring with the 2.5V6. All the advice is good. AND, be real careful with reassembly. My heavy handed bro-in-law thought he could torque by feel (didn't bother to ask me). Stripped one of the plenum to manifold holes. Had to heli-coil to repair. Remember, this is aluminum you are dealing with. So be careful to torque everthing to specs and no more. As daytonairoc said you don't want to have to take it all apart to put it back together again.
