Default No Spark after Distributor Replacement

We replaced the distributor on a 98 Avenger yesterday, and it actually started, twice. Now it's dead again.

When it did start, is started smoking like a banshee. This car has never smoked.

When we tried a second time I ran the engine at about 2500 rpm for about 2 min. Still smoking. So I let go of the accelerator, when I could hear that it seemed to be ticking, like it was only running on 5 out of six cylinders. It never started again.

Now we got the Distributor from the junkyard, not my first preference, but times being what they are... It came out of a 98 Chrysler Seabring. Is there a problem with that? It still tests fine too.

Any ideas would be appreciated
