i'm planning on doing the same thing to my 97 Avenger ES, but know very little about how to do it. i was asking on another section of the message board, and someone said its pretty easy if you find a 'donor car' (another Avenger from the same year with a manual transmission). my next question was, does it matter that the only Avengers with manual transmissions also had smaller V4 engines? i know almost nothing about cars, and i don't plan on doing the work myself, but i'm just trying to find out if its as easy as it seems. from what i understand, all i have to do is find a cheap 97 dodge avenger and have someone take the transmission out of that and switch it with the one in my car. can anyone confirm or correct this? and does the difference in the engines matter? thanks

well what is needed to be done is clutch pedal mounting it's a hydraulic clutch, you need the half shafts from a second gen eclipse easiest route is to find a v6 eclipse 5spd and nab everything off of that, you'll need to mount the master cylinder to the firewall perfect otherwise it won't work properly, the swap itself is fairly simple as is with any tranny swap. just nab everything you can from an eclipse i'd suggest grabbing the entire pedal assembly, i'm sure you'll need a new tranny mount but it should mount in the same exact spot. the flywheel for the 2.5 should be the same as a 3.0, same with clutch, i don't know too much about these cars yet but I have performed tranny swaps and such. I had a 91 plymouth colt that i was doing a 4g63t swap to but now everything is going away for the avenger i just picked up :-D, you'll need the shifter, linkage, possibly starter, flywheel, clutch, clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, clutch hard lines I don't know much about the OBD II system but if it's the same as OBD-0and OBD-I then the 5spd has no type of computer at all for it but you can't interchange computer so you'd have to do some type of ecu jumper/bypass in order to switch things like say for reverse lights and clutchless/no neutral starting

Lol, this thread is a little under a year old bud, but since you restarted it....
The thing is that the CPS needs to be relocated on the 2.5 motor. ExileRacing has been working on this swap for over a couple of years, off and on now, with no success. If you can do it, by all means, go for it! There would be A LOT of happy Avenger/Sebring owners that would owe you a debt of gratitude if you can pull it off. It's not as simple as the theory would lead you to believe. The CPS has been worked out, it's finding a tranny strong enough, making it a bolt on process, wiring, and taking care of clearance issues that's going to be tough. There is one person that has done it and he had to cut and weld quite a bit to fit a manual tranny in there...in the end, he is/already has sold his Avenger. It's just not worth the R&D to do a 5spd swap on this 6g73. That doesn't mean that you should try though...ask these guys at http://exileracing.com/

ehh i don't see why we'd have clearance issue's, i mean if i had a 3.0 mitsubishi to grab from i'd use that, but I don't, n i don't see myself getting one. only eclipse i will ever own is a 1st gen. and i've already had 3 the 1.8,2.0,and 2.0t
