help! crankshaft damper pulley removal is proving impossible!
[sm=smiley25.gif] We have a 1996 Dodge Avenger 2.0, and it keeps eating belts (literally chews them up!)! It looks like the pulleys are the problem with some sharp edges and dings, and they need to be changed. We got some new pulleys, and taking out the old ones is proving to be the toughest problem of all! In the car book, it looks possible to remove the pulley because in the illustration, there is plenty of room to remove it.... That isn't the case in reality! We can't get the crankshaft damper pulley out because it is against the frame of the car, and there is no room to pull it out. Is there something that perhaps collapses so that we can pull it out in such a confined space? Please help! [sm=smiley25.gif]
Looks to me like there is room in there according to the book too. Did you try to raise the car and remove the wheel and inner splash shield (I'm assuming, yes)? It does look pretty straight forward. I know that didn't help, sorry.
yeah, we tried to take off the pulley while the wheel and splash guard were off. no luck. no room at all.
thanks for trying and for taking the time to write.

You need to lower the motor, use a 3-jaw 5-10 ton puller, and a longer grade10 bolt.

thanks! we were able to lower the motor and replace the pulleys. it did the trick! thanks so much!
