Default 95 Avenger 2.5L Stalling Problem/TPS Info needed.

Hi I'm Robert. My mother has a 95 Avenger ES with the 2.5L V6 w/ auto and O/D. It stalls sometimes when idling in neutral and in gear. She said a local mechanic(no success from them) Installed the TPS wrong. Now it like 'slips' but it's not the transmission I believe it's from the TPS sending the wrong information to the ECU. Can someone tell me how to install the Throttle position sensor correctly? Any pictures and tips would be great also what tools would I need. I'm not completely car stupid but I know nothing about the Avenger or the 2.5L

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

No one knows how to correctly install the TPS on a 2.5L Avenger?

Yo man, I cant believe John hasnt replied to this yet........I havent been on here b/c Ive been to busy fixing stupid stuff on my stupid avenger and having to drive my play car to work and back [:'(]

Hey, so check it.............it is stalling at idle? Did you trouble shoot it yet? Answer these questions.....
1. How many miles on car?
2. Have you checked for vacuum leaks?!?!?!
3. Checked your fuel filter lately?!?!

To properly calibrate the TPS you need a voltage sensor. You can adjust it with the ignition on without the car running.
1. Ground your multi-meter and find the positive signal to the ECU from the TPS..... I dont know what colors they are on this TPS so youll just have to fiddle with it and poke into the plug with the multi-meter.....you will find the positive signal when ---while moving the throttle open and closed you will trigger a voltage signal....most likely straight up on and off.
2. Adjust said TPS sensor accordingly. I have a preference to adjust them so that they read at about 5% throttle. I have a 87 300zx Turbo Im building and the TPS on that is basically an on off switch for the fuel.....

A little trick I did with my TPS and butterfly valve in the TB......follow the cable back from the TB and you will find the base plate for the Throttle Cable. There are two 10MM screws that holds it on. Adjust the tension on it (preferably while the car is running so you can monitor the rpms) so that you barely have the revs right above the idle speed. This should cure your problem........I had the same problem with my car. Plus it gives you better throttle response!!!!

Your (as you may know...so dont be offended..Im not saying you are a dummy) Ecu actually controls your idle speed (or tries to ) regardless of what you have modded with the TB, TPS, or with the timing. The ECU on this car is such a pain. I went through three alternators before I figured out (with Johns help of course b/c I had no FSM at the time) that the stupid Ecu controls VOLTAGE WTF!!!!! I actually had to take the ecu apart (I had two luckily) and solder new pins into one....This car is such and engineering marvel that it will make and engineering marvel out of a simple person who knows nothing about cars..........GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED MY FRIEND!!!!!!!

Hey, what have you got done to your supra?!?!?! DID YOU HAPPEN TO SEE THE WRITE UP IN SPORT COMPACT CAR A COUPLE MONTHS AGO WITH THE OLD SCHOOL CARS VS THE NEW EVO AND STI?!?!?! THE ONE GUY ( I think from B.C.) HAS A SICK 87 TURBO!!!! LAYING DOWN LIKE....550 HP ...JUST CRAZY!!!

I've been working on my car too, lol. I had to drain and refill the rear differential, transfer case, tried to do it to the tranny but the fill bolt was stuck, and the oil. Did you know that Royal Purple is really purple, lol. I thought it was just a name...it's actually purple lmao.

Anyway, I don't see the TPS making the tranny slip. The TPS measures how much the throttle plate is open, the ECU then correctly puts in fuel. I can see it giving you issues with the stalling, but not the slipping.

The TPS is checked with a multimeter as Todd said, but you need to remove the plug and then meter it as per Haynes Manual or Chiltons to make sure the value is within spec. It's not an adjustable TPS either, so it's either good from the start or bad. The only wrong way to install one is if they put the tabs from the throttle plate on the wrong side of the tabs on the TPS...doing it the wrong way would not send the ECU any throttle position but 0% (closed) and cause the motor to run lean and sputter (heard really easily from the exhaust) while accelerating because the ECU won't "see" more air being put in and the computer won't compensate by adding more fuel.
Do you see a CEL light? If so, do the key dance to get the MIL code(s). Last thing is to take it to a shop that can do a thorough scan to get tranny codes.
Stalling brings me to the relays, o2 sensors (check CEL), CPS. I hardly ever think about the computers since it's rare to see them go bad, though it can happen and has.

As for the slipping, I say, check the tranny fluid. Make sure it's Mopar ATF+3 and not Jiffy Lube's tranny oil + some sort of Lucas Oil stuff. Our tranny is very picky. Swap the relays on the firewall around with each other.
Does it slip when warmed up only or anytime it wants to? It just sounds like the tranny fluid to me, or the relay.
Need more info about the issues, like when it happens, why it's happening (accelerating, raining, hot, picking nose).

I know you guys think that it's the TPS but that measures the throttle plate and it won't make the tranny slip. Look around the area to visually inspect for any electrical plugs, vacuum hoses, and the likes. For all we know, the mechanic could have accidentally knocked something off or loosened something.

I was thinking the CPS also after I posted that reply while I was outside getting pissed about have to replace a head gasket.....WOO HOO

I use royal purple in about everything I have other then the avenger and my wifes Taurus. I remember when I changed the rear end fluid in my Z and I overfilled it............it went running down my arm and I was thinking " Holy S***, it really is purple!!! how cool is that?!?!"
It really is a superior fluid though, Ive been told that some people who use it dont even change their fluids for around 7,000 miles (motor oil) Im still stuck on Mobil 1, but I get pissed when I think about how the shilackle the american public and post the highest quartely earnings ever for their companie last year (along with Exxon) while we just so happen to be in the middle of a gas crisis. I think Im going to start using AMSOIL, I use it sometimes in my bike and it works great. It makes for much smoother gear changes, plus heat dissipation and will really help when I do something stupid like throw a turbo on it (I have all the parts, just need to weld the manifold)

AMSOIL is what I'll try next, we happen to have a distributor here on Oahu..yay .
So far so good with the Royal Purple, I've read folks doing that with RP too. I, personnaly, wouldn't go that far before an oil change only because of the turbo, otherwise, heck yeah I would, lol.
I used Redline 75w90 and Redline Heavy Duty shockproof for the diff and transfer case. I'd like to find a fill bolt replacement for the tranny before I have to destroy the one that's on there now because it's already semi-stripped[:@]. If I have to, I'll take a dremel and square off the bolt just so I can take it off.
