Painting
there is a vinyl paint put out but it tends to blister and there is a dye for the carpet.
but IMO the time you would spend dying the carpet I would just replace it with after market and the color you want.
If your going to paint the vinyl i would make sure it is super clean and do very thin coats and be careful it scratches very easy.

I heard that dyes work better on vinyl than any paint because of the blistering, scratching, or just plain falling off issue like Slhomer stated. IMO, if your carpet isn't in terrible shape and you can stand to not have it in the car for however long it takes to completely dry.
Dye...the better choice for what you're looking for.
