Unhappy 95, 4X4, 318, rear differential ratio

Hello to all! I am new here and see you have a good forum
with some knowledgeable members. I could have likely saved
myself a lot of money and misery if I had found this forum before
buying parts for a rear end project on hand.

My rear differential, according to the under hood OEM label has a
3.9 ratio. I had to travel 250 miles to buy an assembly from a salvage
yard since I could not find any locally and the salvage yard guy said
it was an "exact fit", ...NOT. When I got home, I find the tag on the
purchased assembly says "3.8." Then I read a thread here saying the
spring perches and shock brackets are different, and sure enough they
are.

SOOO, if I have the perches and brackets changed, will the gear ratio
(3.9 vs 3.8) work without messing up my transfer case or something else?
Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

There was no gear ratio in the 3.8 range. It must be a 3.92s. Pull the cover, ring teeth divided by pinion teeth=gear ratio.

My truck has 3.55s, the tag says 3.5.

And yes the 2wds are spring under and 4wds are spring over.

Hello and thanks for the reply.
The rear end came out of a two wheel drive about 98 vintage. I just now went and cleaned the tag on the cover good and read it again. Someone has turned the tag over or it was installed backwards. It is a 3.9 after all.

Is there a difference in the shock mounting brackets or are they the same angle? If I only have to change the spring perches then I may go ahead with it. So I don't lose more money looking for another one.
