Default How tough are the autos?

I have been thinking about getting a 2wd as a toy and building it up, I specifically want an auto as everything I own is a standard transmission and I can want the comfort of not having a giant stick in the middle of the floor.

I know how tough the old 727 and 904's are but how much abuse can a 94 ish tranny take and can they be built up for street/occasional racing. I have only had one auto Dakota, a 95 that was fully restored, two tone, metallic blue on the bottom and a nice tan on top, tan leather buckets (still have these), completely loaded, totally cherry, that I hit a patch of black ice and rolled it in 45° weather, anyway, I didn't have it long enough to have problems, crap that was a nice pickup.

Anyway, how good are these for long term fun use?

Ya I think most people would say the 727's are the only tough transmission Dodge has. My 46rh took a lot of abuse and still kept on going. I drove it hard with the 5.9 and 33's.

But once it died due to a busted transmission line the dried it out, it never ran the same. Two full rebuilds, I blame the first shop for not doing it right and kill it several times. 2nd shop got it right after several returns for not running perfect.

Everyday driving a GOOD 46rh to start out with is more than enough. But being this old they are all beat to hell.

If this auto dies again I'm going with a NV4500 if I can find one or a NEW race ready 46rh from phoenix transmissions.

that is what I figured. When I start the project I will probably just have it built at a local tranny shop, I know a few who like to build for racing.
