Taking my Dakota to the track
I'm going to take my '94 Dakota to the track this Saturday. Both my turbo mini-van and my Dad's turbo T&C wagon have tired transmissions and I'm itching to race. I'm waiting on parts to finnish a new trans for my Dad. I've been looking on the web for 1/4 mile times to see what to expect or try to shoot for. All I could find were times for the '98-'99 Dakota R/T which was 15.4 in the 1/4 mile. I couldn't find any stock times for a '94'-'95 Dakota with a 5.2. Does anybody know the 1/4 mile time for those? I'm thinking if I can get the truck to hook up I should do a tad better than a stock R/T. Street tires at the track are worse than street tires on the street. I'm not going to race it again until I get a limited slip differential. I just want to know what it does. It's usually the race car support vehicle.
Some details on my truck:
Drivetrain: 5.9, 2WD, '93 exhaust manifolds & y-pipe, 3" exhaust w/Flowmaster 50 series muffler & no cat, '93 fuel system with 60 psi of fuel pressure, 5.2 computer, electric fan, 3:55 differential & no LSD, 46RH transmission.
Chassis: Extended cab, Camper shell, approximately 4000 lbs (according to the scale at the scrap yard).

Back when my truck was 2wd 5.2 I think I ran high 17's. Stock tires 3.55 gears.
When I dropped in the 5.9 2wd I think I ran low 16's I hit 15's a few times. Stock tires. 15.4 might have been my best run probably when I installed 3.9 gears with the rear locker to keep traction.
This is at high elevation over 1 mile, so to compare to sea level take off 1 second.
I think 4wd 5.9 ran mid 17's it was the 33's with 3.9 that did me in.
I haven't raced lately with the SAS to see. I might go do a Dyno run soon to see what the HP&TQ numbers are at the wheels. A Dyno day is coming up $30 for 3 tests.
I don't think I need to tell you but loosing some weight will help. Remove the tailgate, the spare tire, anything that is in the bed. Remove junk from the inside of the truck, passenger seat is only a 4 bolts (I never removed it though). Run with only minimum gas in the tank 5-8 Gallons. Power brake launch.
Most importantly DON"T FORGET to video tape it!!!
I only have a few videos although I ran all day lots of times.
Here is my Youtube of 4wd 5.9 running 17.5 beating a Hemi Ram.
1st 11.25 1/8 17.20 1/4 80.5 MPH 2nd 11.23 1/8 17.22 80.9 MPH I won both races.

I don't have the time but I beat my Dads 04 Chevy Z71 5.3 Vortec.

LOL I always was proud, when it was stock 2wd 5.2 I won a burnout contest against 5 Camaros 2 ran on alcohol. I got the trophy to prove it.

I got 15.2 in the 1/4 mile. I didn't try to shave any weight and I had 3/4 of a tank of gas. .1 seconds faster than my turbo-charged mini-van and .5 seconds slower than my Dad's turbo wagon.

Me and a friend of mine racing. His Mustang is stock with 217,000 miles.

My friend stalling his car. I'm including it because it's a funny video.

I don't plan on racing my truck on a regular basis. That's what my turbo-charged mini-van and my Dad's turbo-charged station-wagon are for. The truck is the racetrack support vehicle. The tranny in my van is acting up, I'm waiting for parts to build my Dad a stronger transmission, and I wanted to know what my truck did at the track so that's why I raced it. I really need slicks. Traction was my problem. A quicker shifting transmission would help it last longer if I did race it more. I'll do something about it if I ever have to go into it.
