1990 heater core replacment
1990 Dakota 3.9 Had to take out the whole dash to replace this thing. but now the speedometer is off by 10 to 15 mph at highway speeds. all i did was slide it off the circuit board, and slide it back on when i was done. ANY SUGGESTIONS or ideas thanks
Before we worry too much - take a 10 mile stretch of highway with mile marker.
When you pass the starting mile marker, note the odometer and trip odometer readings.
When you pass the 10th mile marker, note the odometer and trip odometer readings.
I say this because my speedometer just decided to indicate 20% over (i.e., at 42 indicated I'm actually doing 35; at 72 indicated I'm doing 60; and at 90 indicated I'm doing 75) due to sheer age.
I've got a spare speedometer just came back from being rebuilt and the odometer reset to a future setting (I'm at 406,700+; freshly rebuilt is set to 420,000).
IF your odometer is correct, it's just the speedo going bad; rebuilding or replacing, and truthfully, at the age of our trucks, a replacement from the boneyard may be just as bad.
BTW - In the "Good to know" bit - no, you DON'T have to take the whole dash out. Just the lower half dash. See, for instance, the heater core replacement instructions in the 1995 or 1996 FSMs downloadable from links in the FAQ posting in the Stickies at the top of this subforum. BTDT.
