Default Clicking sound

Re: 1996 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 4X4 five-speed. I notice a ticking/clicking sound when starting from a stop. I guess road noise prevents me from hearing it on the highway. Seems to be coming from the area of the transmission tunnel hump but I can't be sure. Impossible to locate myself, and not on good terms with my mechanic/brother-in-law at the moment. Any ideas/experience? Vehicle has about 290,000 miles on it now (purchased new from the dealer by Dad back in the day). Thank you.

Wow.

I'd love to have that parking lot and work shop / garage to work in.

Back to your question ...

Can you put the truck up on jack stands under the rear axle and under the front control arms, and then see if you can find the ticking sound with it sitting still but "running at speed"?

As always, be very VERY careful that the tires are completely clear of the ground, and that they're also completely clear of you!

Before I do that, I was just looking out there for a few specific ideas so I could have a starting point for my search.
