The factory service manual has a decoder in it.

What year is your Dakota? Several of us have FSMs to hand.

Shucks, post the VIN less the last six characters (which are the sequential serial number) and we'll decode it for you.

(Are there PDF's of owner's docs, service manuals, etc?)

Service manuals can be had used on eBay, or bought new from the reproducer (Bishko Books) as a PDF on disc, or as paper. (Hint: New paper is expen$ive in my hone$t opinion.) Bishko's web site is Bishko Books, Repair Manuals, Owners Manuals, Parts Books & Sales Brochures (autobooksbishko.com) .

They may have the owner's manual also, plus possibly sales lit. Or they may not. Doesn't hurt to poke it and find out.

For the VIN ... From my 1988 manual, I get:

1B7Fl69XXKS

1 - Made in USA

B - Dodge

7 - Truck

F - 4001-5000 lb GVWR

169X isn't in the 1988 manual, so can't help much there.

For 1988, those would be, in order, 4x2 or 4x4 (the 1), the series (no difference in 1988), the cab, and the engine.

X - VIN check digit

K - 1989 (Extension: J is 1988, so K should be 1989)

S - Warren Truck Plant
And the last six are a sequence number; so if it's like 000001 it's the first vehicle made for 1989, if it's 999999 they made a whole boatload more than they admit to

At the top of the page where it says tools, is a VIN decoder. Type your VIN there and it will pop up. This works for 1981 and later vehicles.

Huh. How 'bout that. Works! Thank you.

1989 Dodge Dakota Sweptline Sport Convertible

Has the MSRP, Invoice, destination... and not much else. The folks at Chrysler must not have been keeping up on the data back then as much as we do now.
