Default 89' V6 Noise follows RPM - harsh rattle

On sudden throttle input, or above 2000rpm, my 89 V6 Dakota has a rattling noise coming from the engine. The Belts and Fan do not appear to be rubbing anything, so I'm wondering if this is what a loose timing chain sounds like?

The engine has 244,000 mi on it.

Suggestions?

How hard is it to replace a timing chain/gear set?

Justin

could be a rod knocking or a bad lifter.

I just found a way to measure the chain slop without dis-assembling the engine. I think I'll start there first.
