96 V6 Starter HELP!

96 V6 Starter HELP!
Every now, and then when I go to start my truck, all I get is a click. I had the battery, and alternator checked, and they are fine.
Is the starter the only other thing it could be?
If it is the starter, how hard are they to replace? The manual I have says to unbolt the steering shaft. Doesn't really look like that would be necessary.

RE: 96 V6 Starter HELP!
It is the starter. If you get stuck somewhere and it just clicks tap the starter with a tire iron and it will then turn over. My manual that goes up to and including 1996 says it will slip out thru the bottom. I have changed my 91 2 times, slips out thru the bottom.

I've taken mine(89) out from the bottom as well.

RE: 96 V6 Starter HELP!
I did my 95 V6 4X4 a few years ago. Sounds like a similar situation – start sometimes, just clicks others. The solenoid is probably all that is bad but I couldn’t find it alone. The starter change on the 4X4 is a pain in the ***. I have experience and tools. Yes I had to take the steering shaft to the gear loose. With the 4X4 on my 95 it wouldn’t come out the bottom.

RE: 96 V6 Starter HELP!
My boss gave me the number for a mecahnic he uses. I gave the dude a call, and he came out to check it out. He crawls under the truck, says " Its a Nippondenso starter, the contacts are bad,"
He said he would be back the next day,to fix it.
In less than 50 minuets, he had the starter out, contacts replaced, and the starter back in. If I hadn't been there I'd have never believed it.
Total charge was $85.00, and that included a $10 tip I almost had to make him take.
