Default Need Help! Computer wireharness problem? Please Read!

Hey everyone, well here is my problem..... for the last 2 months I had major issues with my truck. My truck is : 1993 Ext cab, V-8, 4x4, automatic, LE. At this point I feel helpless and I'm ready to drive this thing off the nearest cliff!

The problem I had was it would just die, and then start later. Well I did all the checks of stuff since there are many posts on this and gave up so it went to the repair shop... which I was not happy about. Well $600 later it got a new CPS sensor, new computer, and that was that. Ran fine for 2 days and the same problem, kept dying so I took it back and he ordered another computer, installed that one, and it was fine longer. Well it started again so computer #3 was put in Monday. Today I got stuck again and concluded it's something else. Now I'm able to trace the problem, If I get it started it will run forever once you grab the plug that's on the harness that plugs into the computer the truck dies. It will not start again unless you unhook the battery, after that it fires up and I can recreate the dying problem. So I think it has a bad pin in that plug? Has anyone ever dealed with anything like this? I think my only option is to replace the complete engine wiring harness? What else could it be???? Any help would be very greatful.... is anybody parting one of these out? I'll buy your harness![/align]

Well, I wouldn't go so far to replace the engine wiring harness.... yet at least.
You say it happens when you grasp the plug by the computer. I would remove the plug from the computer and inspect all the pins and make sure 1) their all straight, 2) their all corrosion free and clean, 3) the connector seats firmly. I would not recommend using di-electric grease on these connections simply because there are so many pins, and adding too much grease may cause problems.
Also, I would take a look at all the wiring near the computer and make sure none of the wires are chafed.

I had 2 similar problems. One was it would die and not start for a long time. After a long time and 2 computers later I found out it was my coil. It would work and passed all the tests. But once I replaced it no more problems. The second was fuel injector #2 was not fireing. The injector worked but I found out that it was the pin on the connector for the computer. I beleve it was the JET plug in that messed it up. Once I took off the Jet plugoff andfixed the pin It worked. check to make sure the pins didnt bend or get loose since you have upluged it lots of times. If nothing else works You might go to junk yard and get a connector for the computer and cut and splice each wire, It might be easyer than replacing the complete harness. When yunkyards take out engines and stuff they cut wires and all. so you might not find a complete one. There is 60wires I think but take your time do one by one and sadier each connection. Good luck

Ok this is another post, following the post about bad computer wiring harness..... The update is I inspected and traced just about everywire under the hood I could. I was able to start the truck and kill it everytime. Well if you pushed down on the big plug that goes into the PCM the truck would die, so I made a braket to push up on the plug and I could not get it to die, I drove it for an hour, over bumps, on the freeway and it was good! Well this morning I got about a block from my house and it died AGAIN and WOULD NOT START!!!!!!!!!! I'm so ready to get rid of this truck! I messed with it, unhooked the battery and got it started. What the heck can be wrong? Should I resolder the 3 redwires under the junction block to be safe? I looked at them and they seemed to be ok, but maybe they do need to be resoldered. I did find a PCM plug at the wrecking yard and splicing that in I think is the next step.

I would think twice before splicing all of those wires as you do lose voltage when you do. I had a similar problem with my Dakota and it was the fuel pump. Just a thought.

You can replace individual pins on those connectors, and thats the route I would take, sure is simplier than splicing as many wires are on that connector.
If possible, try to narrow down which wire(s) it is. Get the truck running, and wiggle each wire, one by one if possible, until the truck dies.

Thanks for all the replys I appreciate the help. Do you know where I can get the pins at? I might have to trouble shoot the fuel pump..... since it was once replaced with an after market brand. Maybe power is getting cut to the pump intermittenly? HMMMMM? I have to figure this out so I can sell this truck!

Try an auto parts store. If that doesn't work, try the stealership.
I know they have to carry them somewhere.
