when all else fails take it to the dealer. Pay them to diagnose it. then you can either fix it yourself or pay someone else to fix it for cheaper.

My 92 318 LE does the same dam thing. I've checked everything.
This thing is going to kill me one of these days when it croaks
on the Tollway.

Turned out to be the computer. Replaced about 2 months ago been running fine ever since.
