Default Noise

My '94 Dodge Dakota has started making a what I would describe as a clackety sound coming from the area of the front end pulleys. When you rev the engine I also hear a whosh sound. I have tried to locate the spot where the sounds originate but can't locate them. The truck does not seem to suffer from any performance lose. Any ideas?[sm=thanx.gif]

Take the belt off and try each accessory seperately, that should tell you which one it is.

The fan should spin by hand on a cold vehicle. If the fan is hard to turn by hand when it is cold, the fan clutch is bad and engaging the fan all the time...that maybe what the "woosh" is. You may also want to check the idler pulley and make sure the bearing is not going out in it....there shouldn't be much play in the idler.

Might check the timing chain rubbing the inside of the front cover.Get an automotive stethescope and put it against the different parts until you determine where the noise is.Good Luck.

Is this truck a v-6? I have replaced many timing chain units on these engines. Chain, pulleys, guides, tensioner. If you take the serp. belt off and the noise is still there it could be the timing chain.
