Default 93 slt ext cab

My neighbor has a 1993 Dakota with V8 and 175,000 clicks on it for sale. Tranny has a clicking sound coming out of it at the back end of the tail stock. Wondering what would be a fair price to offer him for it. He wants to get it out of his driveway and I could replace the tranny if need be, but don't want to get too much money tied up in it. Lookinf at this as a first car for my soon to be driving son. I have looked at Edmunds and NADA and it gets kind of confusing. They seem to be much lower in value then I see them listed for around town at the local dealers and car mags. Any advice on what is fair or what to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

Have a mechanic shop do an inspection on it. They'll usually charge one hour labor and they'll tell you exactly what youre buying.

Any ideas on what will be covered in the inspection? Will they tell me things like how good the pump pressure in the auto tranny is, compression, fuel pump pressures or is this just a rerad from the computer?
