tranny hestitation from 1st to 2nd on 87 3.9 4x4
Hello,
I'm a first time poster.
I have an 87 3.9 4x4 long box. I recentlyhauled a heavy load of fire wood and now the trany is acting up. I dont think its going bad, but just may need an adjustment.
Starting it up and driving after sitting overnight or for a few hours the shifting from 1st to 2nd hesitates. 2nd to Drive and Reverseare ok.
It usually shifts at about 15mph from 1st into 2nd, but now it shifts at about 20-25 mph into 2nd depending on any incline. But after thefirst initial shifting from 1st to 2nd this problem goes away andshiftsup and down normally in city driving until it sits for a few hours or overnight and the problem starts all over again.
I replaced the trany filter and fluids and this initial hestitation of shifting from 1st to 2nd reoccurs.
Any idea's of what could cause this or is the trany on its way out?
I was told that a regulater of some sort on the trany might cause this, but that wasn't coming from a reliable source.
Thanks for any help

There is a cable inbetween the throttle body and the tranny You could try adusting it. I dont think this is your problem but It wont hurt to try. There is bands you could adjust.I would also say change the fuild but you already did. Just check to make sure you put in AFT+ or higher and make sure its completly full acording to the dip stick. If nothing else works your cluches for 1st to second gear is worn out. good luck
I called a trany rebuild garage and they most likely think it is a stuck governor valve causing the problem when cold.
He said to check the fluid and add a little "lubegard" to slick it up a bit.
Hethen said to go out on a gravel road and go about 3-5 mph and put it in park and back into drive right away a couple of times. I did it about ten times.
This is suppose towork the valve and loosen whatever might be causing the govenor valve to stick. Might be a shaving or piece of dirt on the way of normal operation.
He said he's done this before and if this is the cause it works most of the time.
I guess I'll see if itthat is the problemtommorrow morning.

the 87's are the same as my 89. they have a steel rod that goes from the throttlebody (carb in your case) to the transmission. i had the same problem, i loosened the bolt where the rod attaches to the govoner on the tranny. then i pushed the lever on the govoner as far forward as it would go, thentighten the bolt back down. solved my shift problems in 5 minutes. worth a try, hope it works for you.
