Default Engine and Trans Swap

I have a 1994 Club Cab 4x4, 5.2, manual transmission with a little over 220,000 miles that has gone back into daily service. I am thinking of picking up a junk yard 5.2 to rebuild while I am still driving my truck. I would also like to switch to an automatic transmission in the process. There is a local junk yard with a 1993 Club Cab 4x4 with a 5.2 and automatic. How much would I have to take from that truck for a successful swap? Can I reuse my transfer case, transmission mount, drive shaft and wiring harness from my 1994 or should I take all that from the 1993? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Anything is possible but you might as well get the whole truck as a donor for a project like that. Hell, you might as well just get another truck that already has an automatic. A swap like that is never worthwhile. Why do you want to get rid of the stick shift? My truck has the same configuration and I wouldn't change it for the world. Autos are for girls.

I say go for it. Hey I changed my 5.2 to a 5.9 and changed the 2wd into 4wd. So I know something like that will take time but if you realy want it dont be discorreged from it Im not against a manul tranny but hey if thats what you want! Do it! Plan it out have all your parts ready and swap it to get it all done in a weekend. I think for the swap you would have to take the steering colum and tranny crossmember and trannymount. you should be able to use your transfercase. Im not too sure about the drive shaft. Your drive shaft may be shorter or something so get it anyway. Make sure the tranny is complete with all lenkages and wires. As far as the computer and wires,I would say take the eletrical connectors for the auto tranny and the wireing connector for the new trucks comp. and the OD switch for the dash, just add in the wires inbetween the comp. and the tranny. Just use your stock computer if you want. Or take the entire wiring harness. The harness should install easly. The computers are the same for manul and auto, justuse your stock one.If you need wire diagrams check the FAQ under this section for a complete set.

It seems the majority opinion is to keep the manual transmission, I was looking for something a little different after 15 years with the same truck, but I already have a 63 falcon project andI don't want the truck to become a second large project right now.

Can you tell me what other vehiclesI can look at to find a rebuildable core for my manual transmission? Will a full sized Ram with a V8 and manual have a transmission that will swap in? I want to rebuild the engine and transmission without taking the truck out of service.

Thank you.
