Default Some questions

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and have a few questions.

I recently bought a 2 wheel drive 92 Dakota extended cab with a 318 with over 160Km on it. It needs a little body work and a paint job but other then that it seems to be pretty solid. I really like this truck want to invest some time and money into it so it will last me awhile. This is my first truck so this has been a learning experience.

So far I have replaced the plugs, wires, distributer cap, rotor button, pcv valve, breather, air filter, oil filter and oil.
I also added a helical throttle body spacer just for the fun of it. I plan on changing the transmission fluid and filter as well as flushing the radiator very soon.

Is there anything else I should consider doing as preventative maintainence? I am also wondering want kind of oil I should be using in this truck. I have been told to stay away from oils that contain detergents made for high mileage vehicles, is this good advice? Right now I am using a normal non synthetic 5W30 due to the on coming of winter.

One last question, is anyone familiar with the magnets sold to attach to oil filters? They claim to trap more metallic particles, are these effective or are they just a money grab.

Thanks for your time

Diff fluid &brake fluid. PS not a bad idea, but messy to change out.

Only a few oils out there are non-detergent (like Valvoline VR1). Oils like valvoline max life actually have seal conditioners and such designed to minimize/prevent leaks in higher mileage engines. Valvoline spent millions developing these products and teh people they pay to do so know more about engines than the folks who are telling you to not use them. I'd use Max-life or regualr old valvoline. No penzoil or Quaker state. If you've ever seen the inside of a penzoil motor, you'll understand. Wal-mart does a great disservice to engines when they perform your oil change (they use the cheapest grade of Penzoil available).

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the advice. I will look into Valvoline's products.

I wish someone told me about the quaker state oil before I put 211,000 miles on my '95

Hate those late warnings

Just because it's still running doesn't mean it's not full of crap. When I got my Aspen it was running, but the inside of the motor looked like it had been rhino lined. That buildup caused the #7 exhaust lifter to stick and flattened the cam lobe (all the lifters had to be pryed out). The sludge isn't a problem until it begins to clog galley's and journals. That's the kind of long-term wear I'd rather avoid by using quality oils.

Pull a valve cover and see if you're still sold on Quaker state.
