Transfer case
you did not say if the transfer case made loud noises when engagedor is hard to shift into gear and then makes noises.
if it's hard to get in 4x4 it could be a adjustment on the transfer case linkage. if it grinds going into gear it could be the syncro gears. if it does not go into gear at all the t-case could be screwed !
try the adjustment first. if that does not work i wish you luck.

forgot if it makes loud noises while in gear. chain is toast.
i love my dak with the new process chain drive transfer case, beat the crap out of it but it still lives. buti wouldtake one of those early toyota gear driven transfer cases anyday.
hate me, love me, i tell it like it is.

I'm sure the chain is gone. This is what the story is.
I found a good deal on a 93 with a 3.9L, a broken windshield had the price down to $800. It had some other issues but nothing I couldn't fix. After I test drove the truck I decided that I liked the size alot and already knew that the 3.9L was a dependable engine. So I give the place half the money right then, fill out the papers, and make arraingements to pick it up in a few days. When I was going home with it I find out the tranny is slipping! After giving it a thorough looking over in the garage I decided I still got a deal. Then a few days later I needed 4WD and found that broken too.
Lesson learned was that when you buy something take it home right then. I tried 4hi and 4lo before I put money down on it. My guess is that somebody beat my poor old back row beauty in the few days I waited to get back to the dealer. I'm still not giving up on the truck but am trying to save money on it. I drive the old trucks to work and the wife drives the Caddy SLS so this is our second rig. Having trouble finding affordable parts for this truck but I will eventually and I'll still have a deal on the dakota. This site is great for info, Glad I found it.
