Default Ball Joints

I have a 95 4x4 extended cab with the V-6 with 147,000 miles on it. I want to change the ball joints with the help of some rented autozone tools, hopefully. Do I need to remove the front axle to replace both the upper and lower ball joints? How do I remove the axle to do this? I think this is a job I can tackle in my garage but the only thing that makes me nervous is removing that axle. Thanks for your help.

I don't think you need to remove the axle to complete this task

You shouldn't have to remove the axle. Make sure you have air compressor/tools, it will be a heck of a lot easier. Also, use Moog joints and keep them well greased.. shouldn't have to replace them again.

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the axles, it's easy compared to getting the ball joints out. You'll probably need a torch. I broke Advance's tool and ended up pulling the control arms and taking them to a shop.
