Default Windshield wiper switch/turn signal installation

The windshield wiper switch in my 1996 Dodge Dakota Sport snapped because it was too cold outside for it to turn properly. It still works when I want to use the lever for the turn signal, but as far as the windshield wipers, there's a problem. When I push it in to use the wiper fluid, it the fluid streams out until I flash my brights. I bought a replacement switch, but now the problem is how do I take the steering wheel cover off so that I can take apart the steering wheel in order to get to the switch to replace it? I rented the "special tool" to take apart the steering column, but I can't use it until I get the cover off. I took out the 2 screws behind the wheel and took off that plate that (I thought) held the cover on, but the cover won't come off.

So in short, how do I take the vinyl cover off the steering wheel to get to the steering column.

The only tool you should need is (I BELIEVE) a T20 Torx bit.

On the underside of the column is 3 torx screws(two towards the front and one in the middle towards the back), take them out and the bottom cover willl come off. The top cover is a little tricky due to the Hazard switch.

The switch just comes out with 2 or 3 torx screws, then unplug it from the harness.

It's a really easy job, good luck.

ya a torx. But you need a long thin shaft. If it is one of the removable bit sets its too thick, they will not work.
