I have a 1993 Dakota LE,5.2 with a 518 and 4 wheel drive. The trans had been abused and when we started to pull it out to replace it we found that someone had installed a Jeep trans in it(starter on the other side) So we pulled it out and built a trans from parts I had laying around but the transfer case was also abused and needs help or replacement. The question is...What years are interchangeable on the transfer case and were they used in any other vehicles like the full size trucks? The tag under the hood says it was a 231 HD transfer case. The 231 came on Dodge Dakota Ram 88-up and durango / Jeep XJ, YJ and TJ 1986-On Cherokee Grand- OnGMC / Chevrolet but not the same as dodge modles. This site gives you exact years.

Thanks for the info and links, They were very helpful. The local Pull a Part is full of jeeps and the parts are cheap.
