What you have done pretty much amounts to a test and you have proved it is bad. They do go out, my 90 went out during about 1992.

After you pulled the switch off, trying driving around without the switch. The tranny should go into like a default mode, with the ability to shift through all the gears, thats also like a test. There should be a light that lights thewhole button up (ORANGE) when engaged. My switch has broke before too, butyou can drive without it which entails noability to shift it in to drive. If it doesn't shift up into OD, then you have a bad sensor or internal probs.
