Default Tranny Interchange on 3.9L

My uncle has a '88-90 Dakota (forget the exact year) that has a slipping transmission. When he bought the truck the PO said he had replaced the transmission and rearend with one out of a different truck. My uncle said the guy acted like the parts came from a truck a lot older and maybe a half ton but he didn't really know or understand so just bought it. I doubt it has a 1/2 ton rear axle...pretty sure that would be wider. But what transmissions bolt up? Is the 3.9 V6 a different bell housing than a 318? If it is the same then it could be about anything I guess.

Thanks,

Derek

Same bolt up(V6,318,360). A500, A518, 904, 727...

If it's just slipping, the fluid could be low or a band could just need to be tightened.
