Default Heat Selector Cable.........??

Howdy folks, my heat selector isn's working, I popped the unit out and I noticed the cable came off the slide, problem being, the other end of the cable seems to be off as well that controls the temp door, do I have to take the whole dash apart to get to it??

So I've figured out the end by the firewall, but how does the cable attach to the hot/cold selector lever? I know where it attaches, but can't figure out how it stays on to slide back and forth.... Anybody got a pic or maybe an explanation?? Thanks...

What year Dakota do you have? I think most of the later models went away from cable operated controls to vacuum operated...maybe you can find one at a salvage yard to use as a reference.

and it's the hot cold selector and not the defrost, vent, floor selector, which is vacuum like you said, but the hot cold selector is a cable.
