Default COLD AIR OR OPEN ELEMENT

So the past couple of days I have heard the cons and pros to CAI and Open Element Filters,

On my truck (3.9) It is possible to rig up one or the other, Personally I have a CAI on mine but I hear alot of people saying they like the open elements better! The Argument is , Is that with the cold air your are infact getting cooler air, but the amount of air flowing into the system is lower (Lower CFM) than the open style although higher than stock, On the other hand the argument with open style
is you are getting more air into the system and better airflow but its warmer air!

So I was wondering what yall guys experiences are with both types.

I guess it depends on what your going to do with it. Like for me I like to race my truck at the track. So for most of the time I have a open air filter set up on it. But if you want more performance but dont need the best get a CAI. Here is how mine looks like.

I agree totally with Crazy. CAI is better than an open setup, from a strictly performance standpoint. I'd like to add two things, though:

1) The CFM being lower with a CAI setup is untrue, if setup properly. When done right, there will be an air opening directly in front of the filter on a CAI system; forming a basic Ram-Air type action.

2) I have a '94 with the 3.9 in it, and just want to know how in the h**l you made a CAI for yours, lol. I've been searching for either a bolt on CAI for mine, the components or at LEAST the directions on how to build it myself. Hit me up with some info if you got time.

Oh yea i forgot! on the other hand if you still have the stock setup then you know the tube that runs from the round air cleaner box to the grille. thats where its getting air, and if you look on the front of that tube or through your grille you will see there is a flap or a piece of plastic covering the opening , it simply pops off. then there ya go a simple ram air set-up , air flows throught the grille directly into the tube and into the filter, A nice highflow filter and your ready to go , thats what i did when i first got my truck and I could tell a difference it breathes better especially with my custom exhaust, now that i have the cold air I can tell no difference in it and when i opened up my stock hose, I may sell my CAI for extra cash and put my stock breather back on because like i said i can tell no differnece and I still get performance with it and its not as loud.. thats just my 2 cents worth on a homeade ram air setup lol

i took my plastic piece off also noticed a little difference... also what u could do is take the end of the stock hose off that is behind the grille and buy a performace highflow filter and clamp it on the end then just make a bracket to hold the tube up and u are good to go...(don't forget to take out the slock filter)

I can't believe this is being debated. Haven't any of you noticed that your vehicle runs better/stronger on colder days? Maybe it's an image if my figmentation. Anyway cold air is denser, which allows more oxygen through the bores of your throttle body. Would this not mean more power, especially if you have a ram air effect, than just allowing the engin as an air pump to draw it's own hot air from under the hood?
