87 dakota trans/OD question

Default 87 dakota trans/OD question

its a 87 dakota 4x4 w/ a 3.9L is it suppose to have overdrive bc i only have 3 gears while driving no matter how fast i go.

check the switch on the dash first..

if it has a switch it's suppose to have OD, if not, then the answer is no. If you are suppose to have OD, check the Od solenoid, notorious for going out, simple fix

No, 1987 didn't have a 4-speed automatic.

Hey im having this problem with my dakota. the OD doesnt work.

SO my question is, where is the OD solenoid and how do i check it?

oh sorry. its a 92, 3.9L with the auto transmission (obviously) my OD hasnt worked since i bought the truck, and im just now getting around to fixing it.

Make sure your OD switch is operative. If so then you may need to replace the O/D solenoid. O/D and lockup are on the same harness. You have to replace the entire internal wiring harness. They are located on the valvebody. You need to pull the VB down to replace them.
