Question 96 Dakota starts and stalls when warm

My truck starts fine when it is cold or the first time. However, if I stop and try to re-start it, it just stalls out as soon as it starts. It will sometimes stay started if I give it a little gas and just pop it into gear. Once I am driving it does not stall. If I wait 4+ hours, then it starts again.

Any ideas?

sounds like an issue with either the ASD relay or the circuit to it (could also be fuel pump relay), if the relay is good, check for corrosion in the wire loom, particularly around the splices.

is it throwing any codes? if theres a problem with one of the signals from any number of the sensors it could maybe cause something like this. I had a crank pos sensor wire melt (think was shorting so would occasionally would stall) especially when warm

seing as the 96 was OBDII I am not sure how to check those codes, but you could check the FAQ if you don't already know how

Smile Codes?

I have not researched how to pull codes. However, I saw an earlier post about the ASD but it was on an earlier model so I was not sure if it was the same for the 96.

Thanks, I will check these out later today after work and update.

Having the 96, you are kinda lucky in the OBD systems.
Mine has both OBDI AND OBDII.

I can do the key cycling if I want to 'ask' my truck how things are going. I can also use the in-depth OBD scope if I want more precise information and in case I need to check the history.

Ya we have a post in the FAQ. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135194
Well acorriding to that post is says obd2 from pre 99 you cant use the key on and off trick. But you can jetnoise? Does it work or just blink.

But if you go to most autoparts stores like autozone or checkers can check the codes with a scanner for free. Also OBD2 scanners are so cheep now days. Cheepest I seen is $20.

Question Source for ASD?

I checked the local auto parts stores and have not found the ASD relay. Is this a dealer only or is there a good place online for such things? Just curious.

Thanks

mine works, gives a full data reading on an obd2 scanner and i can do the turn the key trick too, the ONE good thing about obd2, and no EGR! and i think is is just a standard 5 prong relay that you canpick up for a couple bucks. mine has a realy in the box for an electric fan and there was not one stock, if you have that one pull it out and swap them and see if it helps.

Crazy:
Yes, both my OBD I and my OBD II gives me accurate codes.
The OBD I gave me the indication that my IAC was going and the OBD II gave me a trans code that I need to watch out for.
If I want to do a quick check to see how my truck is doing, just in case something is going on, I just do the key cycle. Usually it's nothing, but sometimes something comes up.
And along with Bad96, I also have no EGR! Whee!
