to engage it in 4x4 either keep it in park or put it in neutral and shift it but do not not do engage it in gear

2wd TO 4wd High and back
You can do at any speed. With tranny in gear. Its best to switch at some speed vs dead stop. Do a smooth shift do not hisitate.

2wd or 4wd High TO 4wd Low and back
Engine running or off Put the tranny in nutral and go 2-3mph a little speed is better then a dead stop. Shift transfercase into 4wd Low with no hisitation. Make it one smooth shift.

Ck the driver's windshield visor. I had no instructions either but one day found a sticker inside the visor with the info on it.

for the 92 the instructions say to engage 4hi the vehicle must be in motion, just pull back on the lever firmly until it engages, and the 4x4 light on the bezel of the boot will go on. I know for the at least the 96's i think you can engage it at a stop, and the stick pattern is different... i always thought the 92 was awkward w/ the diagonal...
