Default V6 transmission into a V8?

I have a 91 dakota 2wd that has a bad automatic transmission (loses low and reverse when warmed up). I have access to a 93 dakota 2wd automatic transmission, but I am not at all sure it will fit. I am new to the dakota trucks, but have been a mopar fan all my life. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bud

Well the v6's have the 42rh and the v8's have the 46rh... the second number being the torque handling rating (a number out of 10). Basically the v6 transmission might not be able to handle the extra torque of the v8.

Someone else might know better than me but you might be able to take the good transmission and swap the valve body with the bad one.

thanks for the answer, I am more worried if it fits than the torque difference as it will not get driven hard or often , it will be more for easy driving than anything else. The bolt patterns are the same? do I need the flex plate from the v6? do I need to use the v6 torque converter too? Bud

The tranny will bolt up. The V6 and V8 blocks are nearly identical except for those 2 extra cylinders. I'm not sure about the flex plate and torque converter, but a couple people on here have done V6 to V8 swaps and could tell you for sure.

Use the flexplate that belongs to the motor you are using and use the torque that belongs to the good trans. The v6 flexplate is counter balanced for the v6 only. Everything bolts together.

I forgot to point out that if they are not both the small trans , you will also need the drive shaft.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the info. This is a huge savings for me as I can get the trans and driveshaft free. Thanks again, Bud
