Default Help with 1990 3.9L 4X4

Hello all,
New to the site and I have inherited a 1990 3.9L 4X4 with manual trans. I got the truck for free because it starts intermittantly and sometimes dies. Sometimes I get spark to the coil and sometimes not. It has a new fuel pump and filter and a new starter.
I work at a small shop but we don't have any diagnostic equipment here. I cleaned the battery terminals and leads down to the starter and the ground to the frame. I can't seem to locate the splice everyone is talking about on this rig. I checked the leads from the battery to the starter relay and the auto shutoff relay and they seem to be good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Kindest Regards,

I would try a new pickup plate in the distrib.
